The Refuge HQ and Visitor Center are closed due to the federal government shutdown. All scheduled events are postponed until the government re-opens. Refuge roads, trails, lands and outdoor restrooms remain open to the public at this time.

Big Game Hunt Public Safety Notice

Hunting activity associated with the Big Game Hunt will be occurring at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge from Nov 07-09, Nov 21-23, Dec 05-07. Visitors are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, wear visible clothing, and follow all posted safety signs and guidance while on the refuge. Refuge staff appreciate your cooperation in ensuring a safe experience for hunters and visitors alike.

Meyers BranchHarris Creek and Big Mineral Units will be affected by the deer hunts.

The "Big" Sit Bird Count

The "Big" Little Sit

Normally this event is called the "Little Sit", but this one is the Big Sit because birders across the entire country are participating!

Whether you are a new birder, an expert birder, or somewhere in between, the Big Sit is a fun event open to everyone.


What: The Big Sit count is a fall count of all birds from a single location. We will count all species/individuals of birds possible! This is a "Sit n' Go event where you can attend for as little or as long as you like!


What to bring: you, binoculars, lawn chair, beverages/snacks, etc. Spotting scopes provided.


When: Saturday, October 7. Some of us will arrive by 5:45 AM to listen for owls/nocturnal birds. Feel free to join us anytime from 5:45 AM until about 10 AM and/or 5:30 in the evening until dark if you want to join later in the day.

Directions from the Hagerman Visitor Center:

Take a right (north) out of the Visitor Center parking lot road.

At the bottom of the hill, take a left onto the gravel road (Wildlife Dr).

The road will end at the Big Mineral Day Use Area.

Take a right onto Bennett Lane.

You will cross a bridge over Big Mineral Creek, then go over a low

water crossing.

There will be several small gravel roads going off to the right.

Stay on Bennett until the road forks, then go right.

When the road forks again, go right.

Take the gravel road marked “H” (you will see oil tanks on the NE corner) to the right and go all the way to the end.

Events and activities hosted by the Friends of Hagerman are funded by donations and powered solely by volunteers.  There are no fees for admission to the refuge or parking. The refuge is open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year and you may drive on any road unless gated.
