Student Guidelines for a Great Visit to Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge
Welcome! We’re excited to have you visit Hagerman NWR. Please review these guidelines to help make your field trip safe, fun, and respectful to wildlife and volunteers.
What to Wear & Bring
Dress for the weather: your field trip will be mostly outdoors.
-
Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes—the trails may be uneven.
Flip flops and sandals are not permitted.
-
Hats, sunscreen, and insect repellent are highly recommended. Spraying repellent on shoes before the nature walk works well.
-
Bring a water bottle labeled with your name. A refill station is located inside the Visitor Center.
-
There is no food for sale, and food is not permitted inside the Visitor Center.
During Your Visit
-
Please dispose of all trash in the trash cans provided or in trash bags your group brings.
-
Stay on marked trails, unless a leader gives permission otherwise.
-
Remain with your assigned group during activities. Students may cross the parking lot only when accompanied by an adult.
-
Leave nature where it belongs. You may observe rocks, plants, and other natural items, but please return them where you found them.
-
Inside the Visitor Center, please use quiet voices and take turns at exhibits.
-
Show respect to presenters and volunteers who are sharing their knowledge and time with you.
-
Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not approach, feed, or follow animals—human food is harmful and can cause unsafe behavior.
