Prairie Restoration - Dr. Peter Schulze
Saturday, September 14, 2019, 10:00am – 11:30am
Dr. Schulze will provide an update on the nearby Sneed property and what Austin College is studying there. His update will cover the past 3 years.

Peter Schulze is Professor Biology and Environmental Science, and Director of the Center for Environmental Studies at Austin College. His professional interests are in ecology, ecosystem restoration, and the potential to combine environmental and economic understanding to solve problems. One of his favorite projects is working with his students and colleagues, and Dan Dinkler and other Hagerman personnel, as they try to tweak ecological processes and thereby restore the prairie ecosystem at Austin College's Sneed property. Pete's wife refers to his time at the Sneed property as "tractor therapy".

Shorebird Migration at Hagerman NWR

Mid-March - mid-May and mid-August - late October are times to view the Central Flyway shorebird migration at the Refuge.  Each spring many thousands of shorebirds pass through,  on their way to breeding grounds in the northern US, Canada or the high Arctic.  They are back again in the fall, on their way to the tropics or even South America, to spend the winter.  The Refuge offers wetlands for resting and re-fueling.  Shorebirds can be a challenge to identify; literature and field guides are available at the Visitor Center.

Geese At Hagerman NWR

November - February - Trips to Hagerman NWR to see the huge flock of wintering geese are an annual holiday tradition for many visitors. Please stop by the Visitor Center for information and visitor services such as maps,  free wildlife guides and binoculars-for-loan.
