Free Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge Field Trips

Enjoy a fun-filled day of learning about nature, at the refuge or in your classroom.

Ranger Spencer Beard, his assistants, Master Naturalists and and other volunteers will ensure that you and your students enjoy a fun-filled learning experience.  

Hagerman NWR requires an adult:student ratio of 1:25, with a maximum of 150 students. All field trips must conclude by 3:30 PM.  

Before beginning a program request, please gather the following information:

  • Would you prefer to have a program at the refuge, or a ranger visit?
  • Number of participants
  • Three date choices
  • Desired field trip length
  • Lunch preference: food and beverage are not available at the refuge.  We have a large pavilion for brown bag picnics, or you may eat offsite.
  • Would your students like to visit our small gift shop in the Visitor Center?


Begin the Field Trip Request process by choosing the type of program:

Self-Guided, Teacher-Led

Work through our Junior or Advanced Ranger Programs with your students, at your own pace.  We will provide activity booklets.

Ranger or Naturalist Led

The refuge will provide at least one presenter per station (Ranger Beard, his assistant or a Texas master naturalist).   TEKS and Lesson Plans Provided.

Ranger Classroom Visit

Ranger Beard and/or his assistants would be happy to visit your classroom to share a lesson about nature with your students. Available for any grade, you may choose a topic or allow the ranger to choose.

Events and activities hosted by the Friends of Hagerman are funded by donations and powered solely by volunteers.  There are no fees for admission to the refuge or parking; the refuge is open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year, drive on any road unless gated.
