The Little Sit Sunrise Bird Count

Meet Jack and the Bird Census Team while learning how to identify the birds of North Texas, and enjoy the beautiful sunrise over Lake Texoma! Modeled after Cornell's national "Big Sit" event, a group of dedicated birders invite you to join them at sunrise to conduct a bird count as multiple species fly to the water and the surrounding land to feed. Leaders will bring spotting scopes and will provide tips for identification of the many species you will see.

This event lasts a couple of hours, but all are welcome to come and go as they please. Participants are advised to bring a chair, binoculars and water.

Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery (TNFH) initiated their Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys Temminckii) head-start program in 2000 with the objective of augmenting naturally occurring populations with low densities and reintroducing the turtles to extirpated populations where they historically occurred. Come lean how, at TNFH, hatchlings are housed, juveniles learn to hunt in ponds, and who benefits from the turtles.

TNFH also annually spawns adult American Paddlefish (Polyodon Spathula) to hatch and rear juvenile fish for stocking to reestablish a self-sustaining population.

Benjamin Thomas started work as a Fish Biologist at Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery in March 2023. He has been with the US Fish and Wildlife Service since 2020 and has a BS in Biology from Wittenberg University in Springfield Ohio and a MS in Biology from the University of Central Missouri. Ben is the lead biologist overseeing the alligator snapping turtle head start program and assists with the spawning of paddlefish, alligator gar, channel catfish and rearing of the resulting fry.

Trees are an important part of our world.  They provide wood for building and pulp for making paper.  They provide habitats (homes) for all sorts of insects, birds and other animals.  Many types of fruits and nuts come from trees - including apples, oranges, peaches, walnuts and pecans.  Even the sap of trees is useful as food for insects and for making maple syrup -- yum!  Come join us on April 20 for a free class to learn about trees. We'll be going out on the trail to measure the ages of trees and to make bark rubbings.  The attendees will make a fun tree craft to take home.  For ages 5-10.  Registration Required.   Photo credit:  Cindy Steele

Join us for the May meeting of the Friends of Hagerman NWR Nature Photography Club. Photo club members, guests, and visitors are welcome to attend meetings. Ken Scheepers will give a presentation about his South Africa Trip.

Ken Scheeper's presentation will be of his recent 8-week, 6,451-mile trip across South Africa, where he was fortunate to have photographed 172 bird species. Ken will present a slide show of the photographs, beginning with an overview and context of where he traveled to, the gear he used, and answer any questions the members may have during the presentation.

        Ken Scheepers

        About Ken Scheepers

A native of South Africa, Ken came to the USA in 1985 following and extensive 2 1/2-year adventure on a sailboat, sailing some 34,000 miles that began at the age of 28 back in 1982, and is proud to have become a Naturalized Citizen in 2006.

I have lived in North Central Texas ever since 1985, and currently my home for the past 23 years is Flower Mound, Texas with my wife, Gail.

Now retired from working in the Electrical and HVAC industries all my life, the twilight years were the most rewarding as my only task was to help institutional clients improve their HVAC systems efficiency, saving millions of dollars.

My hobbies have included gardening, racing dirt bikes, building and flying RC model airplanes and helicopters, building, driving and competing as a professional drag racer in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) from 2000 – 2009, followed by road coarse racing with the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) to 2018. After the racing, traveling here in the US and abroad, photography, and maintaining our home is what I enjoy.

It was while on one of our 2021 RV trips which happened to be up on Lake Texoma is where I “found” the Hagerman Wildlife Refuge and joined the Friends of Hagerman Photo Club.

Since 2013 when I used my brother’s Nikon D7000 DSLR camera while on a trip to South Africa, photography has become my passion. I have attended multiple photography workshops, learned a lot, and over the years, gravitated to birds and wildlife, landscape and astro photography, in that order.

          • 6:30 AM - 9:00 AM
          • Blackland Prairie Raptor Center, Brockdale Park, 1625 Brockdale Park Road, Lucas TX 75002

Join the Friends of Hagerman NWR Nature Photography Club for a field trip. Join us for a special photography event at the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center (BPRC) in Lucas, Texas.

This event is limited to FOHNWR Nature Photography Club members only.

Blackland Prairie Raptor Center (BPRC) is hosting a special event for our photo club. BPRC’s raptor ambassadors will be on display for you to photograph. The raptors will be tethered and perched on a natural setting or platform. This will allow for more natural photos, as typically the educational raptors are tethered and perched on a person’s gloved hand. You may be able to get as close at 6’ from the raptors.

All fees for this event go directly to BPRC to continue their conservation and rehabilitation of birds of prey. BPRC took in over 700 birds of prey in 2023! BPRC website is https://bpraptorcenter.org.

6:30 AM Gates open. Gates to Brockdale Park will open at 6:30 AM to allow you time to park and setup your equipment. Sunrise is forecasted to be at 7:05 AM. Brockdale Park is on the edge of Lavon Lake and provides a beautiful background for photos. You are welcome to walk around the park and take photos until the event concludes.

7:00 – 8:00 AM Raptors on display. Raptors will be on display starting at 7:00 AM for maximum one hour at various locations throughout Brockdale Park. There may be a Black Vulture, hawk, owl, American Kestrel, and/or Mississippi Kite. It is hard to predict what raptors will be available, as BPRC never forces a bird to do an event. Depends what mood the bird is in that morning!

9:00 AM Gates close. Be sure you are finished by 9:00 AM, as the park gates will be locked.

          Registration

          - Fee is $25 per person for photo club members.

          - Registration is required to attend this event. Each person attending must register separately.

          - Registration link will be available as we get closer to event date.

          - Registration closes on 9/6/2024.

          Cancellation

          - No refunds for cancellations by the registrant or by the venue.

          - If the event is canceled by BPRC because of weather, the event will be rescheduled. No refunds for registrants that cannot make the new date.

          - If you register and then can no longer attend the event, please contact the event leader below.

          FYI

          - You can use tripods or monopods. Do not use any type of flash for the birds.

          - The park has a large parking lot, BPRC gift shop, restrooms, and drinking fountain.

          - The park is wheelchair accessible. There is a cement sidewalk that goes all around the park.

          - Dogs are not allowed at this event.

Every year the Friends of Hagerman gives the public an opportunity to support the Eastern Bluebird population and learn all about them via the Adopt-A-Nestbox Program.

Participants of the Adopt-A-Nestbox program will be invited to name their adopted nestbox, and visit it as often as they like.  All nestboxes included in the program are easily accesible via a stroll along Raasch or Harris Creek Hiking Trails.

Participants will receive an email every week during nesting season with a picture of the inside of the nestbox and an explanation of its stages of development. An adopted nestbox makes a great Christmas gift!

The price of $35 per nestbox helps to support the expense of maintaining the impressive Bluebird trail of 45 nestboxes throughout the refuge.  There is a limit of three nestboxes per person.

Things to Consider While Naming Your Nestbox:

"Nestbox Name" refers to the label you would like on your nestbox, for example: Porter's Perch

Be creative!  Your nestbox may house Eastern Bluebirds, Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Carolina Wrens or (rarely) Prothonotary Warblers--so try be more inclusive than "Bluebirds" in the label. If left blank, the label will be the gift recipient's name or the purchaser's name if not a gift.

          NOTE: 15 letters maximum.

Gift recipient's name: Leave blank if not a gift.

Email addresses of your gift recipients: Leave blank if not a gift.
