This Recipe Is for the Birds!

Want to make a special treat for the backyard birds?  With your parents' permission, mix

  • 1/2 cup of peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup of lard
  • 1 and 1/2 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of cornmeal

to form a soft dough; if too sticky, gradually add more flour.  You can also add some uncooked oatmeal, raisins or a few chopped nuts.  Store the "dough" in a jar in a cool place.  To feed the birds, you can form a ball of "dough" about 1" in diameter and push it onto the bark of a tree near other bird feeders in your backyard,  or ask a grown-up to drill some holes in a stick that is at least 1 and 1/2 inches in diameter, push "dough" into the holes and hang the stick from a tree.
