Outdoor Crew Update

The Outdoor Crew at Hagerman NWR will meet at the Visitor Center the first Tuesday and the fourth Saturday of each month, weather permitting.  During the past year, the crew  cleared brush, made trail repairs and removed barbed wire along Harris Creek Trail; they also relocated the trailhead, added signs and repaired the observation blind on the trail. They removed barbed wire along Refuge Road. At Crow Hill they removed brush along the trail and are in the process of removing barbed wire.  In addition, the crew  cleaned day use areas and refinished the benches in the Butterfly Garden.

If you enjoy working outdoors,the Outdoor Crew is your opportunity to show your love for nature, sprucing up trails, trimming and removing brush, trash and general cleanup at Hagerman!  For more information and to join the crew, please use CONTACT.

Garden Docents Plan Field Trip April 5

Love native plants?  Love butterflies?  We have the perfect volunteer opportunity for you - Butterfly Garden Docent. Docents lead garden walks and tours through the growing season,  helping folks identify plants and  butterflies and understand the plant-insect connection.  Meet monthly for training and brown bag lunch, March, May, July, and September,  on the first Saturday at noon; for April, June, August and October, the first Thursday at 10 am. For April 5, docents will gather in the Visitor Center at 10 am for a short business meeting and then caravan to Sandy Point for a field trip to view the Froster Elfin butterfly.  There will be an indoor program in case of rain. Visitors are welcome.

Walks are held on the first, third and fifth Saturdays, as well as the afternoon of Mother's Day.  Docents form a team and take turns leading events.  This volunteer role is open to men and women 18 - adult, and teens 16 -17 accompanied by a parent or grandparent. 2018 Butterfly Garden Walks Begin April 7

The Butterfly Garden docents at Hagerman NWR have announced the 2018 Garden Walk schedule.  Walks are set for the first, third and where applicable, the fifth Saturday each month, April through October. For April, walks will be held from 10 am - Noon and will begin earlier later on in the season as the weather heats up! In addition, a special event, Mother's Day in the Garden is set for 3 -5 pm, Sunday, May 13.

Walks are family friendly and offer an oppornity to learn more about native Texas plants for the North Texas area and to view visiting butterflies.  Docents can explain the plant butterfly connection and have close-focus binoculars to loan for your visit. Children may enjoy watching the Monarch metamorphosis puppet  go through the  stages of the Monarch life cycle or completing a garden journal. Be sure to bring your camera!  You may come and stay during the walk or come and go, and all is free of charge.

Walks are not held in case of rain.
