Don't Drink the Water
Monday, June 12, 2017 at 9:25am

Last week Refuge staff tested the water from the artesian well near the yellow gate just north of the low water crossing by the visitor center, west side. It was positive for total coliforms but negative for E. coli. This is good news, but the fact is artesian well water on the refuge is not potable and should not be used as a drinking water source without disinfection. The well was posted to help our visitors understand that the water is not potable and may cause an increased risk of illness if ingested without treatment.

Coliform bacteria are a large group of bacteria that naturally occur in the environment. Most types of coliform bacteria are harmless to humans. However, some (especially fecal coliforms) can cause illness. The presence of coliform bacteria in water does not guarantee that drinking the water will cause an illness. However, it does tell you a contamination pathway exists. Drinking water standard requires that no coliform bacteria be present in drinking water.
