Second Saturday Programs

Second Saturdays  are free nature programs held at the Refuge and are open to the public.  The format is a talk, accompanied by slides, and may include a brief field trip on the Refuge, depending on topic; programs are geared to the interest level age 12 - adult.  Presenters are experts in the presentation topic and are drawn from area colleges, nature organizations and professionals in the field of wildlife/biology.

Second Saturdays at Hagerman NWR evolved after the second Red River Valley Birding and Nature Festival,  held in December, 2006.  A group of speakers had been identifed to serve as faculty for the first two festivals, giving the program committee a good starting point.  Click here for a list of all Second Saturday programs held from the beginning, April, 2007, through December, 2016, and a huge thank you to all these volunteer presenters through the years!

NOTE!!  Second Saturday for Youth, begun in 2009, has morphed into The Refuge Rocks, meeting on the THIRD Saturday of each month, January through November. Please see Hagerman Youth for more info.

Geese At Hagerman NWR

November - February - Trips to Hagerman NWR to see the huge flock of wintering geese are an annual holiday tradition for many visitors. Please stop by the Visitor Center for information and visitor services such as maps,  free wildlife guides and binoculars-for-loan.

Shorebird Migration at Hagerman NWR

Mid-March - mid-May and mid-August - late October are times to view the Central Flyway shorebird migration at the Refuge.  Each spring many thousands of shorebirds pass through,  on their way to breeding grounds in the northern US, Canada or the high Arctic.  They are back again in the fall, on their way to the tropics or even South America, to spend the winter.  The Refuge offers wetlands for resting and re-fueling.  Shorebirds can be a challenge to identify; literature and field guides are available at the Visitor Center.
