Second Saturday Programs

Second Saturdays  are free nature programs held at the Refuge and are open to the public.  The format is a talk, accompanied by slides, and may include a brief field trip on the Refuge, depending on topic; programs are geared to the interest level age 12 - adult.  Presenters are experts in the presentation topic and are drawn from area colleges, nature organizations and professionals in the field of wildlife/biology.

Click here for a list of all Second Saturday programs held from the beginning, April, 2007, through December, 2017, and a huge thank you to all these volunteer presenters through the years!

NOTE!!  Second Saturday for Youth, begun in 2009, has morphed into The Refuge Rocks, meeting on the THIRD Saturday of each month, January through November. Please see Hagerman Youth for more info.

Wildlife Habitat Cleanup for Families
Saturday, July 28, 2018, 8:00am – 10:00am
Spend the morning with your children and grandchildren improving the wildlife habitats along the hiking trails at Hagerman NWR by removing refuse. Cans, bottles, fishing line and other debris along the hiking trails pose a great threat to birds and other wildlife. This is a great opportunity to instill in your kids a sense of community, environmental responsibility and nature conservation all while helping to raise money to support the mission of the Friends of Hagerman. Walt Disney World will donate tickets to the Friends of Hagerman to support their charity: the more workers, the more Disney tickets donated—and they will be up for grabs at the Annual High On The Hawg BBQ and Silent Auction on November 3rd!

Fill your car with young habitat repairmen and meet at the Visitor's Center. We will partner with the refuge's Outdoor work crew and form teams to pick up litter along Harris Creek Trail. Children and grandchildren are welcome. Wear long pants, long sleeves, closed toed shoes, hat, sunglasses, and bring a reusable water bottle. Bug spray, sunscreen, trash bags, and cold water provided.

Shorebird Migration at Hagerman NWR

Mid-March - mid-May and mid-August - late October are times to view the Central Flyway shorebird migration at the Refuge.  Each spring many thousands of shorebirds pass through,  on their way to breeding grounds in the northern US, Canada or the high Arctic.  They are back again in the fall, on their way to the tropics or even South America, to spend the winter.  The Refuge offers wetlands for resting and re-fueling.  Shorebirds can be a challenge to identify; literature and field guides are available at the Visitor Center.

Geese At Hagerman NWR

November - February - Trips to Hagerman NWR to see the huge flock of wintering geese are an annual holiday tradition for many visitors. Please stop by the Visitor Center for information and visitor services such as maps,  free wildlife guides and binoculars-for-loan.
